How is Chipboard Made?

Chipboard is made by compressing tiny wood pieces using glue. Its main advantage is that it can be produced from wood pieces that have been discarded and this saves unnecessary cutting of trees in wood application.

Chipboard is produced from forest by products. Once the forest is thinned, sawdust is connected. The tiny pieces of wood that remained from the milling process and are no longer useful for other applications will be granulated into wood chips and incorporated into the sawdust.

The mixture is produced into slurry utilizing urea formaldehyde and less toxic binders in accordance to where and how the chipboard will be used. Then it will be subjected to heat and pressure to eliminate the moisture and form the wood chips to panels.

Chipboard is several in various densities, depending on how the product is going to be used. Its normal density is actually is soft which is inappropriate in which strength is the key. On the other hand, medium density ones have more fiber increasing the strength and hardness. High density is the strongest is often used where rigidity is necessary.

Low quality of chipboard is mostly made of small particles of similar size. This process produces soft board that can easily bend and should be reinforced by regular lumber as a way to increase its strength. Most medium density chipboard has both the coarser particles and sawdust but the high density ones are containing coarse chips will little amount of sawdust. Courser particles transport into the inside of the panels while sawdust floats into the top giving it a smoother surface.

Once the basic chipboard is produced, it does not give attractive surface for finishing. Self-sticking decorative or laminate film can be utilized to conceal the irregularities of the chipboardā€™s surface. The exposed edges of the chipboard that is laminated can be cloaked using adhesive edging strips.

The chipboard should not be painted with water-based products for the water in the paint will be absorbed in the fibers of the wood and can cause expansion as well as warping to take place. Instead, oil based paint can be used for it will not cause this problem, however it is not going to hide the irregularities of the surface.
