How is a Tire Made?

Most tires are custom designed to meet the performance needs of the maker for specific vehicle model. The process starts with a computer, converting the mathematics of the special needs of the car into specifications. Prototype tire is made to test the design ability of the tire to provide the aimed characteristics. Making custom designed tires for a specific vehicle would normally take months of testing, inspection and checking quality both by vehicle maker and tire maker.

• The manufacturing process starts with choosing several types of rubber as well as carbon black, special oils, antioxidants, pigments, silica along with other additives needed in the combination to provide the precise characteristics that the manufacturer desires.

• Separate compounds are used for the tire’s different parts. Banbury mixer is a machine that combines the raw materials for every compound to a homogenized batch of the black materials that have the consistency of a gum.

• The mixing process should be uniform that is why it has to be computer controlled. Then the compounded materials are fed into the machines for sidewall and treads processing.

• The next step is to assemble the tires. The first component that will be sent into the building machine is the tire’s inner liner. It is an air-resistant and moisture-resistant penetration taking place of inner tube.

• The body plies and belts come next. These are often made from steel and polyester and are meant to provide strength and flexibility to the tire. The belts are cut according to the right size and angle. Implanting the bronze coated strands fashioned in two hoops is done into the sidewall of the tire forming a bead and assures airtight fit.

• The tread and sidewalls are placed in position over the body plies and belt and pressing the tire parts firmly together. The result is called uncured tire.

• The final step is curing the tire. The uncured tire is put within the mold and inflated pressing it against the mold and to form the tread as well as the identification information of the tire on the side wall. It will then be heated at above 300 degrees Fahrenheit for around 12 to 15 minutes.
