How Insulation is Made?

Fiberglass is now used as insulation. The process of manufacturing fiberglass can be compared to that of making cotton candy, in which is even looks the same, but not the taste. The process of making cotton candy is done by heating sugars into its melting point and then it is spun, then cooling it back down causing it to form cotton like shape.

In the case of producing fiberglass, it is accomplished by melting down silica sand rather than sugar. Then the sand melts with temperature which is more then 3600 degrees F. It will be spread into a very thin and then shot out of the machine that has several small orifices where it can be cooled quickly before it gets the chance to form into an ordered structure. Then it will be spun into the fibers.

After that, it will be sprayed with binding substances and formed in blanks in different thickness. The R value of insulation will identify by their thickness and the insulation which has a thickness of 3 ½ inches will get the R value of the R-11 and for the insulation with 6 inches thick would then have the R value R-19.

The blankets will make up the batt products or will be cut into strips for the roll products. If there is a paper backing for the insulation, it would be added last. And to add the backing paper, first it will be sprayed with substance that resembles like tar act as the barrier of the moisture and it utilized as well to glue the Kraft paper into the fiberglass.

The fiberglass that was sprayed in is produced in the same exact way except for the last step which is the large chopper. Then the material can be pressed as well to high density board that will make the rigid fiberglass sheeting. Then it will be utilized on the exterior of homes and it can also be produced into other structural products.

Fiberglass insulation has very important function like being a vapor barrier of the insulation sprayed on the paper side of the rolled insulation should be facing the warmer side. Then the loose side should have house wrap to protect it against the wind.
