Vitamins are organic compounds necessary in small amounts in human diets to sustain health and life. Without vitamins, the human body becomes prone to diseases and variety of syndromes. The vitamins are named by letters for instance Vitamin A, C, D, E, K and B vitamins group.
First, the vitamin manufacturer would purchase raw vitamins along with other ingredients. In most cases, manufacturers will test the raw materials or send these for analysis. If there are herbs to be added into the vitamin capsule, they will be subject for testing on its identity and potency, and if it is contaminated with bacteria.
Raw vitamins arrive in a fine powder and do not require preliminary processing. But if the ingredients do not come in fine granules, they shall be retuned through mill and ground. There are some vitamins that are pre-blended with filler ingredient like microcrystalline cellulose for it can produce a more granule that can aid further the steps of processing. Technicians in the laboratory may run the test in batches when they work with new ingredients and they also determine if it would require pre-blending.
For vitamins that come in tablet form, the specific size is significant in terms of determining the formula and how well it runs through the machine where the tablet is processed. In other cases, raw vitamins are milled to the right size for tabletting while in some, wet granulation step is required. In this method, the fine vitamin powder is mixed with a number of cellulose particles before they are wetted.
The mixture will be set for drying in the dryer and after that, the formula could be in chunks and these are sized by running through the mill. This will force the chunk through tiny holes of the decided granule diameter and these granules are to be weighed first before they are mixed.
When the ingredients are ready, they will be weighed to achieve the required weight for every ingredient. And after weighing, they ingredients will be dumped into the mixer for mixing. Following this is the encapsulation of the mixture and they will be compressed into tablets with coating.
The filled vitamin are to be run through the polishing machine and the vitamins are being circulated on belt through a number of soft brushes, dusting any vitamin powder away. The Vitamin tablets are produced in tableting machine.
