The raw materials from which spoon and other silverware are made include stainless steel. It is steel, nickel and chrome combined. The best grade of metal used in the production of quality lines is 18/8 stainless steel. This implies that it contains 18 percent of the chrome, and then 8 percent of nickel. Stainless steel is highly popular because it is durable, easy maintenance and relatively low price.
• The first step in the production of spoons starts with a rectangular, flat blanks of stainless steel. The large rolls are being stamped in individual blanks or the flat pieces roughly similar shape as the piece that you will be produced.
• Through series of rolling operations, the blanks are graded or rolled into the appropriate thickness and shapes that the manufacturer requires. The blanks are first rolled across from left to right, and then right to left, lengthwise then it is trimmed to outline. Every spoon must be thick at its base of the handle for bend resistance. This will then provide the graded pieces the proper balance and the good feel in the hand. The piece is now in the form of cleanly and properly finished shape in the utensil’s rough dimension.
• In between each operation, the blanks need to pass through annealing ovens in order for the metal to be softened for the other machine operations. The annealing which is done under great heat should be accurately controlled in order for the final piece to be resistant to bending.
• Then the rolled blanks need to be placed in the cutout press in order for the excess metal to be removed and to shape the piece. This process is almost the same as in cutting shapes from a rolled dough. The shape is cut out and the excess metal should be melted again, transforming back the metal sheets to be reused. When design is applied, it is important for the trimming to be of accurate fit of the pieces into the dies.
• Then the last step is forming of the pattern. Every pattern comes with two hardened steel dies, one with the pattern for the back and the other one for the front.
